Laboratory

Scope Of Care:

The Laboratory supports the military readiness and health of our beneficiary population by providing a comprehensive range of chemistry, pathology, and blood bank services to all eligible beneficiaries.

The Laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), and is licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Lab personnel are focused on providing the highest quality of care, to continuously improve its business practices and maintain all of the accreditation standards.

How long does it take to receive test results?

Depending on the test performed, most tests are completed and reported to your ordering healthcare provider within 24 hours of receiving the sample for testing. Some tests take several days to weeks because they may require mailing out to a civilian laboratory. Results are sent directly (via the electronic health record system) to the medical provider who ordered the tests.

How can I get my test results?

The Laboratory is prohibited from giving patient’s results to anyone other than licensed providers. For some more important and/or abnormal test results, your provider/MHP Team will contact you. You also have several options to request your results:

Contact your Medical Home Port provider/team by calling your Team’s phone number Patients & Visitors/Clinics page.

Can the Laboratory help me interpret my results?

Please contact your healthcare provider for information about how to interpret (that is, determine what they mean). Your provider will interpret and explain the results and provide you with appropriate medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Relay Health also has a great Patient Education library with information on hundreds of topics, including lab tests. Log into Relay Health and go to “Patient Education,” launch the library and search for the name of the lab test.

Are my results confidential?

Yes. This laboratory adheres to test result information disclosure laws. The laboratory report is sent to the ordering physician or other authorized person who has requested the test. Please contact your clinician for further information regarding your results.

A civilian provider is requesting a copy of my results. Can the Lab fax this information?

The NHC Oak Harbor laboratory is no longer authorized to fax test results to outside providers. We encourage patients and outside providers to contact Patient Admin (PAD) at (360) 257-9223.

My provider has requested a test that requires fasting. What is required?

Eating or drinking can cause inaccurate results on some tests. For those tests, we ask that you do NOT eat or drink anything except water or prescribed medication(s) for 12 hours before the test specimen is collected.

My provider has ordered a 3-hour glucose tolerance test. What do I need to do in advance?

Oral glucose tolerance tests require an appointment, usually scheduled in the morning. You will be given a special diet to follow for 3 days before testing and you need to fast (nothing to eat or drink except water) for 12 hours before the test. For your safety, you will need to remain in the Lab waiting area for the full three hours of the test. To make an appointment, call or come to the Laboratory Front Desk.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need to bring your military or dependent family member ID card.
